High Court orders FIR against Varanasi cops

ALLAHABAD: The Allahabad High Court on Monday expressed anguish over illegal detention and assault of three tennis players by the Varanasi police. The court took serious note of the matter and directed inspector-general of police, Varanasi, to lodge an FIR against erring policemen. A bench, comprising Justice Vinod Prasad and Justice Surendra Singh, passed the order in the presence of senior police officials. The court directed the IG to monitor the case. The judges also asked for the submission of progress report. The court would now hear the case in the last week of July. Advocate-general Jyotindra Mishra along with a government advocate filed affidavits on behalf of senior police officers. The advocate-general assured the judges that such incidents would not occur in future. The court also directed authorities concerned to shift SHO Sigra. Earlier, the HC had taken suo-moto cognizance of a news report about thrashing of tennis players by the Varanasi police and summoned senior police officers of Varanasi to be personally present in the court on May 12.
