Police may move HC on ISI agents acquittal

GUWAHATI, June 17 – The Assam Police is contemplating to move the Gauhati High Court against the verdict passed by the Additional District & Session Judge Court recently, acquitting all the convicts, who were arrested from the city in 1999 for allegedly being the operatives of ISI and other foreign agencies. The Assam Police, which made a series of arrests since 1999 in this connection, registered three cases and henceforth charge-sheeted as many as 17 persons. One of the three cases registered under Dudhnoi police station is still subjudice. Well-placed sources in the police department told The Assam Tribune that they are studying the judgment and examining the feasibility of preferring an appeal against the acquittal order and the decision on challenging the order would be taken soon.It needs mention that Assam Police, in August 1999, arrested four persons namely Quari Salim Ahmed alias Abdul Aziz, Md Javed Waqqar alias Mustaffa alias Md Mahraj of Muzaffarnagar (UP), Md Akram Malik of J&K and Hamid Mohammad of Pakistan Guwahati and as many as three cases were registered in this connection.Legal experts, however, are of the opinion that the Assam police, which has failed to gather enough clues against the convicts, would do well not to pursue the case.“If at all they had enough evidential proof, those should have been produced before the session court,” a senior lawyer said.
