Mumbai has highest number of pending pleas before I-T Tribunal

NEW DELHI: Country’s business capital, Mumbai, has the maximum number of pending petitions before the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal, the Lok Sabha was informed on Friday. According to figures provided by Law minister H R Bhardwaj in response to a written query, the Mumbai bench of the Tribunal had a pendency 22,662 petitions during 2007-08. The pendency during 2006-07 and 2005-06 was 26,396 and 31,569 petitions respectively. In terms of pendency of applications, the Ahmedabad bench of the Tribunal had the second highest number of cases. The number of pending cases in 2007-08 were 10,591. For 2006-07 and 2005-2006, the pendency figures were 11,135 and 13,850 respectively. In all, there were 70,832 pending petitions before the various tribunals in 2007-08 and 86,136 in 2006-07. In 2005-06, the number of pending cases was 1,08,468.
